That is a superb list. Personally I'd put Kael higher for her influence and Thomson lower for his terrible Orson Welles biography, but I can't argue with any inclusions.

One film critic I really love is Glenn Erickson, who writes the DVD Savant column at dvdtalk.com - it might not be your cup of tea, but if you haven't read him I'd recommend having a look.

Hello, by the way. You don't know me but a mutual friend recommended your blog to me some time ago. Long time reader, first time commenter. :-)

Thanks, Pearce. I didn't think I had any long term readers (except my long suffering partner). If you're a Kiwi, I can guess who our mutual friend is...

I know what you mean about David Thomson. I read a couple of duff books by him too; I guess I put him first because of his Biographical Dictionary of Cinema, which was like a Bible to me – the first edition from 1975 anyway. In the more recent edition he seems so jaded (and not too knowledgeable) about modern cinema and very American-focused. Still no Jan Svankmajer, for example.

To tell the truth, I haven't read that much Kael, but yes, a towering influence.

I checked out Glenn Erickson – an interesting top ten films of 2009. Cheers.
